Few things make me sadder than the fact that I can't ever read his books for the first time again.
Here are the quotes. Enjoy! If you have any suggestions for me to add, by all means, please do tell.
The rest of his comment on AskReddit
“We judge ourselves by our intentions and judge others by their actions.” Edit: “Sweet, I didn't think this would blow up. I mentioned this because it is now something I constantly remind myself each day. I used to think I was smart and that I didn't need to study and that I was an interesting person who read a lot. In actuality, I'm average, really lazy, and I just refer back to all those books I used to read in middle school before I got an Xbox. Now I try to look at myself from the perspective of others so that I could start becoming what I perceive myself as.”
From a letter to Oskar Pollak dated January 27, 1904.
Full quote: Altogether, I think we ought to read only books that bite and sting us. If the book we are reading doesn't shake us awake like a blow to the skull, why bother reading it in the first place? So that it can make us happy, as you put it? Good God, we'd be just as happy if we had no books at all; books that make us happy we could, in a pinch, also write ourselves. What we need are books that hit us like a most painful misfortune, like the death of someone we loved more than we love ourselves, that make us feel as though we had been banished to the woods, far from any human presence, like suicide. A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us. That is what I believe.
I want one that is funny when you look at the quote and who said it together. Tina Fey put some on the back of her novel Bossypants such as:
“Absolutely delicious!” – A guy who eats books
“Do not print this glowing recommendation of Tina Fey's book until I've been dead a hundred years.” -Mark Twain
“Totally worth it.” -Trees
So I'm looking for something like that, but not too raunchy (high school yearbook) please submit some?
ALSO: this is my own repost from /r/askreddit because they weren't very helpful and you people know your stuff!
“What an astonishing thing a book is. It's a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you're inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic.”
